Michela Allocca, founder of personal finance brand “Break Your Budget,” began posting in 2019 and didn’t see consistent income for two years. Now seven years in, she says maintaining relevance is harder than getting started. Algorithms shift. Platforms evolve. Competitors multiply daily.

“There is significantly more competition now,” she said. “It has skyrocketed.”

Competition looks different across industries. In e-commerce, Alex Yale — a former consultant turned brand owner — says pandemic-era sellers who sourced products from Chinese factories are now facing direct competition from those same factories selling straight to consumers. Margins shrink quickly when suppliers cut out the middleman.

Labor market expert Dan Schawbel of Workplace Intelligence offers a sobering reminder: starting a business may be easier than before, but it’s not easier than finding a job. Both paths are difficult — just in different ways.

Some entrepreneurs are responding with diversification. Matt Barrie, CEO of Freelancer.com, notes that many hustlers run multiple ventures simultaneously, expecting several to fail before one succeeds. In today’s hustle culture, experimentation gets you started. Consistency keeps you alive. What looks like overnight success is often years of invisible repetition — posting, iterating, adjusting — long before the breakthrough comes.

The new era of capitalism may reward initiative. But endurance remains the ultimate competitive advantage.
