While AI coding agents continue to improve, Cognition CEO Scott Wu believes today’s systems are still operating somewhere between a junior and mid-level engineer depending on the task. His company’s AI agent, Devin, can work independently on many coding assignments, but still requires human oversight for architecture, security, and higher-level decision making.

Wu argues that AI should be viewed as an accelerator rather than a replacement. As agents take over software migrations, code updates, and maintenance work, developers can focus on designing products, solving complex challenges, and building entirely new experiences.
